Hello Darlin'

This week was my grandmothers birthday (despite the fact she has never dared to attempt the internet I'll keep her age to myself), and in honor of her birthday, I decided to focus on her favorite singer, Conway Twitty.

Born Harold Lloyd Jenkins, Conway Twitty found great success in not only country music but also in rock and roll and pop charts as well. Music wasn't Conway's only love. Selected right out of high school to play baseball for The Phillies, however he never got his chance to play. Instead he was drafted by the US Army and sent to the far east as an entertainer with the military group The Cimmerons.

While Conway had a unique sound and style, he also had a voice similar to only one other - Mr. Elvis Presley. In fact, in the beginning of his career - shortly after adopting the name of Conway he found his musical success in "It's Only Make Beleive". The single released and convinced fans across the country that Conway Twitty was actually a pseudonym for Elvis.

Conway's most famous duet partner is his long time friend and our First Lady of Country - Mrs. Loretta Lynn. A partnership that started in 1971. The 'Dynamic Duo' would give us "After the Fire is Gone", "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man", "Feelin's" and "You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly".

Conway Twitty would have a total of 55 number one hits ending in 1990 - a feat that no one would match until George Straight in 2002 and would then later break in 2006.

Conway Twitty died on June 4th 1993 following a collapse while preforming on stage at the Jim Stafford Theater in Branson, Missouri. Just months shy of his 60th birthday.

Conway gave the world talent and a voice of love and heart break like in his duet with his daughter Joni. "Don't Cry Joni" or sweet seduction in "i'd Love to Lie You Down". Not to mention Conway's amazing slicked black hair. No matter the time that passes Conway's iconic voice (even if it resignations with an Elvis memory) will always stand as a pillar of past, present and future country music.
