1990 and The Kentucky Headhunters

I love Thursdays for "Throwback"s. Actually, I like any day for a throwback as long as it's not embarrassing on my part. Every morning I check my Facebook accounts (I have two personal pages, long story), and see what kind of trouble I was getting into online.

So last week when I was typing up and doing some fact checking on my Tractors article I realized that there were some years where major winners of the CMA's I had no idea who they were. So I thought about doing a 1993 throwback (the year I was born) but for that being twenty-four years ago most of those entertainers are still holding strong in the musical world. FYI Brooks and Dunn was Duo of the Year and Vince Gill was Entertainer of the Year.

So I decided to step back three more years and visit 1990. While Clint Black was the Male Vocalist, Garth Brooks was New Artist and Video of the Year, George Straight was Entertainer of the year. Still house hold names. But there was a few like Kathy Mattea was holding strong at Female Vocalist of the Year. She boasts two of my favorite turn of the decade female songs "Eighteen Wheels and Dozen Roses" and "Walking Away a Winner".

But The Kentucky Headhunters caught my eye. I loved these 90's band. Like the Tractors they had strong southern rock influence and while Vince, George, Garth, Brooks and Dunn, and Clint were creating some of the best music that country music saw since the 70s these bands were cranking out some trade mark 90s style that, unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people have forgotten about.

The Kentucky Headhunters came about long before their 1990 CMA award. Founded originally under the name of Itchy Brother and consisting of band mates Richard Young, Fred Young, Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney. Itchy Brother was formed in 1968 in Metcalfe County, KY

Pickin' on Nashville, their 1989 album which produced "Dumas Walker" and "Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine" shot them forward into their brief but marked time among the social elite of country music.

Although they have been off the charts and the award shows for many, many a trips around the sun that hasn't stopped the Headhunters. in fact they released an album as recently as 2015. Forty-seven years after they formed. Meet Me in Bluesland was released along with Johnnie Johnson and as the title says they have leaned away from the southern - country - rock sound and towards the blues.

I have listed to the entire album and it is almost a perfect blend of The Kentucky Headhunters we fell in love with in "Dumas Walker" and the traditional blues sound that is to be loved and respected on it's own high level.
